  1. 1917- . Japanese conservative politician,
  2. leader of the Liberal Democratic Party (LDP)
  3. and prime minister 1982-87. He stepped up
  4. military spending and increased Japanese
  5. participation in international affairs, with
  6. closer ties to the USA. He was forced to
  7. resign his party post May 1989 as a result of
  8. having profited from insider trading in the
  9. Recruit scandal. Nakasone was educated at
  10. Tokyo University. He held ministerial posts
  11. from 1967 and established his own faction
  12. within the conservative LDP. In 1982 he was
  13. elected president of the LDP and prime
  14. minister. He encouraged a less paternalist
  15. approach to economic management. Although
  16. embarrassed by the conviction of one of his
  17. supporters in the 1983 Lockheed corruption
  18. scandal, he was re-elected 1986 by a
  19. landslide.
